The Gayer-Anderson Museum, also known as Bayt al-Kritlyya, is one of Cairo’s most atmospheric historic houses. It was once the home of English officer Geyer Anderson Pasha, who moved in during 1935 with permission to furnish the residence in traditional Islamic style and to collect antiquities from Pharaonic, Islamic, and Asiatic cultures. When he left Egypt in 1942, the houses and his collection were gifted to the nation and turned into a museum.
Two Ottoman-era houses, one unforgettable experience
The museum is made up of two Ottoman-era houses from the 16th and 17th centuries—together creating a space where history, architecture, and art come together.
- House 1 (1545): Built by the scholar ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Hadad and later owned by Lady Amina bint Salem.
- House 2 (1631): Built by Hajj Muhammad ibn Salem al-Jazar and later became known as Bayt al-Kritlyya after its Cretan resident.
Why visitors love it
- Atmosphere: A rare chance to step into a preserved historic home with richly detailed spaces.
- Architecture: Ottoman-era design elements that reveal Cairo’s layered cultural history.
- Collections: Rooms and objects curated to reflect multiple cultural influences and artistic traditions.
Gayer-Anderson Museum is a standout stop for travelers who love heritage, architecture, and authentic Cairo character—perfect for pairing with an Old Cairo or Islamic Cairo itinerary.
