Dahshur formed the southern part of the great cemetery of Memphis, the capital of ancient Egypt. Kings of the Old and Middle Kingdoms built their pyramids here, leaving behind some of the most remarkable monuments.
The Bent Pyramid (Sneferu)
The Bent Pyramid, commissioned by King Sneferu around 2600 BC, is especially striking—its lower slope rises steeply before shifting to a gentler angle, a visible reminder of the challenges faced by ancient builders. Sneferu, the first king of the 4th Dynasty, chose Dahshur’s rocky plateau to rival King Djoser’s pyramid at Saqqara.
The Red Pyramid & later monuments
His first attempt ended in a broken shape, but he later completed another nearby, now known as the Red Pyramid. From the Middle Kingdom, the pyramids of Amenemhat II and Senusret III still stand, though in poor condition. Senusret’s pyramid is surrounded by the tombs of princesses Sit-Hathor and Ment.
The Black Pyramid
The Black Pyramid, built of mudbrick once covered in limestone, has eroded over centuries into a dark ruin. Even so, it remains an important step in Egypt’s architectural story, linking the grandeur of the Old Kingdom with later innovations.
