Kaya Escapes

This tomb stands as the most sophisticated example of the offset, or jogged, design used for royal burials in the Valley of the Kings. Stretching an impressive 137 meters—about 450 feet—it winds deep into the hillside. It was first uncovered in October 1817 by the Italian explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni, whose name still lingers as a nickname for the site. What makes the story even more remarkable is that Belzoni stumbled upon it only days after revealing the tomb of Ramesses I, the father of the king buried here. The discovery marked one of the great moments in the early exploration of Egypt’s royal necropolis.
